Explanation
The shape of a jet diffusion flame is affected by a sound wave propagating transversely across it. The jet inside the flame meanders and branches into two streams under a certain condition. This is a composite photograph of a direct image of the flame and a shadowgraph image visualizing the fuel jet inside it. The experimental conditions are as follows: Fuel: methane, nozzle diameter: 3mm, jet velocity averaged at thenozzle:10 m/s, and sound frequency:2kHz.
