・History and Overview

1955 Establishment of the Japan Combustion Research Association

1991 Renamed to the Combustion Society of Japan

The Combustion Society of Japan states its founding purpose as “promoting academic and technical research on combustion and disseminating its results, thereby contributing to the development of science, technology, and industry in Japan, as well as the improvement of citizens’ lives.” The society has a long history as an academic organization. Its predecessor was the Combustion Research Association, established in 1955, which itself originated from the “Combustion Research Colloquium” set up in 1953 as a committee within the Science Council of Japan. The Combustion Research Association was renamed the Combustion Society of Japan in 1991, a name it retains to this day. As of March 2024, the society comprises approximately 900 members, including young researchers and students, spanning academia, industry, and government. These members collaborate to advance various aspects of combustion science and technology, foster combustion research, and develop human resources.
